Understanding the Differences Between Chemical Resurfacing and Laser Treatments
Healthy, radiant skin is often one of the first features people notice, but years of sun exposure, aging, acne, and environmental damage can leave behind fine lines, uneven pigmentation, rough texture, and scars. Fortunately, modern aesthetic medicine offers highly effective skin resurfacing treatments that can dramatically improve the appearance and health of the skin.
Two of the most popular options of performing skin resurfacing are chemical resurfacing (also called chemical peels) and laser treatments. While both treatments are designed to rejuvenate the skin, they work in very different ways and are best suited for different skin concerns and patient goals.
At Tampa Bay Cosmetic Surgery Center, patients receive personalized recommendations based on their skin type, lifestyle, cosmetic concerns, and desired recovery time. Understanding the strengths of each treatment can help you determine which approach is right for you—or whether combining both treatments may provide the most comprehensive results.
How Skin Resurfacing Improves Skin Health
As we age, our skin naturally produces less collagen and elastin. Combined with ultraviolet (UV) damage, pollution, hormonal changes, and genetics, this gradual decline leads to:
- Fine lines and wrinkles
- Sunspots and age spots
- Uneven skin tone
- Rough skin texture
- Enlarged pores
- Acne scars
- Surgical scars
- Skin laxity
- Dull complexion
Skin resurfacing treatments stimulate the body’s natural healing process, encouraging new collagen production while removing damaged skin cells to reveal healthier, younger-looking skin.
Both laser treatments and chemical peels accomplish this goal—but through different mechanisms.
What Is Chemical Resurfacing (formerly called chemical peels)?
Controlled Skin Exfoliation for Smoother, Brighter Skin
A chemical peel uses specially formulated acids to remove damaged outer layers of skin.
As the treated skin exfoliates, new healthy skin replaces the damaged surface.
Chemical peels vary greatly in strength and are typically categorized into three levels:
- Superficial peels
- Medium-depth peels
- Deep peels
Each type addresses different skin concerns and requires varying recovery times.
Benefits of Chemical Resurfacing
Chemical peels are commonly used to improve:
- Mild sun damage
- Uneven pigmentation
- Melasma
- Fine lines
- Acne
- Acne discoloration
- Dull skin
- Rough texture
- Mild wrinkles
Because there are numerous peel formulations available, treatments can often be customized for different skin types and cosmetic goals.
Before and After Chemical Resurfacing
What are Laser Treatments?
Using Advanced Technology to Renew the Skin
Laser skin resurfacing uses concentrated light energy to remove damaged layers of skin while stimulating collagen production beneath the surface.
Depending on the laser selected, treatment can target either superficial skin damage or deeper structural concerns.
Laser treatments are highly precise, allowing providers to customize treatment depth based on the patient’s specific concerns.
Common treatment areas include:
- Face
- Neck
- Chest
- Hands
- Around the eyes
- Around the mouth
Benefits of Laser Treatments
Laser treatments are particularly effective for:
- Moderate to severe wrinkles
- Acne scars
- Surgical scars
- Sun damage
- Age spots
- Hyperpigmentation
- Uneven texture
- Enlarged pores
- Skin tightening
- Collagen stimulation
Many patients experience noticeable improvements after a single treatment, with continued collagen remodeling occurring for several months.

Before and After Chemical Resurfacing
Surface vs. Deep Resurfacing
Both Chemical Resurfacing and Laser Treatments can treat problems at the skin Surface or can reach the Deeper Layers of Skin
One of the biggest differences between chemical resurfacing and various laser treatments is how deeply they penetrate. In our opinion, it doesn’t much matter if you choose chemical resurfacing or laser treatments if you are treating superficial (near the skin’s surface) problems. The biggest difference is if the problems in your skin lay deeper and if you are trying to achieve true structural and textural improvement.
Chemical Resurfacing
Chemical resurfacing can be used to treat superficial problems but they also may be modified to treat deep problems and to achieve true structural and textural changes as needed. After 35 years of experience with chemical resurfacing and after treating numerous patients who had had prior experience with laser treatments, we have found that deep chemical peels are more effective and are, without doubt, safer and have an easier recovery and less complications than deep laser treatments.
Laser Skin Resurfacing
Laser energy reaches beyond the skin’s surface to stimulate collagen within the dermis. Laser treatments generate significant heat–this is how they work. Consequently, deep laser treatments can result in profound redness lasting many, many months. Even worse, this redness often become brown (referred to as PIH or postinflammatory hyperpigmentation). Even worse than this, is that many months later when the red or the brown fades away, the skin may look lighter because it may have lost its natural pigmentation. This is especially true in moderately and darkly complected individuals. This refers to hypopigmentation which could be permanent and which is difficult to treat.
Downtime Comparison
Recovery After Chemical Resurfacing
Downtime depends on depth of the resurfacing and the peel strength.
Superficial Peels
Recovery usually includes:
- Mild redness
- Minimal peeling
- Little interruption of daily activities
Most patients return to work immediately.
Medium Peels
Recovery typically involves:
- Peeling
- Redness
- Tightness
Healing usually takes approximately one week.
Deep Peels
Skin resurfacing is always completed by 7-10 days but continued improvement occurs over the first 1-2 years as collagen is remodeled and additional collagen is formed. Some patients may be a little pink but almost no one, in our experience, chooses to even wear makeup as they do not find the slight pinkness inconvenient.
Recovery After Laser Skin Resurfacing
Recovery depends on the type of laser used.
Light Fractional Lasers
Patients typically experience:
- Mild redness
- Swelling
- Dryness
- Flaking
Recovery often lasts three to seven days.
More Aggressive Laser Resurfacing
Patients may experience:
- More noticeable redness
- Peeling
- Swelling
- Crusting which may lasts week to many months
Recovery may require three to six months depending on treatment depth. Many patients are forced to wear makeup for months to hide the deep redness caused by the heat of the laser treatment.
Sun protection is essential throughout healing.
Final thoughts on Laser Treatments vs. Chemical Peels:
For superficial or light treatments, we don’t think the choice matters much. For more aged skin with deeper structural and/or textural problems or for deep facial scars (ie from acne or trauma or other causes), we believe that deep chemical peels are more effective, safer, and have an easier recovery than deep laser treatments..
Finally, we believe that it is not always the technique chosen but the EXPERIENCE of the provider you choose which gives you the greatest peace of mind that you will achieve the best possible results from your procedure.
Medical-Grade Skincare Maximizes Results
Professional skincare plays a critical role in maintaining treatment outcomes.
Daily use of physician-recommended products may include:
- Broad-spectrum sunscreen
- Vitamin C antioxidants
- Retinoids
- Growth factors
- Peptides
- Hydrating moisturizers
Consistent skincare helps protect new collagen while extending the benefits of resurfacing treatments.
Who Is a Good Candidate?
You may be a candidate for laser resurfacing or chemical peels if you:
- Have realistic expectations
- Want smoother, healthier skin
- Have sun damage
- Notice fine lines or wrinkles
- Have acne scars
- Want brighter skin
- Are in good overall health
- Follow proper sun protection
A consultation helps determine which treatment offers the safest and most effective outcome based on your skin type and goals.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is laser skin resurfacing more effective than chemical resurfacing?
Short answer is no. Laser treatments sound high tech and should be better but all lasers use heat energy to create the resurfacing. Chemical resurfacing generally provides more dramatic improvement for wrinkles, acne scars, and collagen production with little downtime, while deep laser treatments may result in prolonged recovery over many months.
Which treatment has less downtime?
Superficial chemical peels usually have the shortest recovery. Deep chemical peels have slightly longer recovery by a few days. More aggressive lasers require the longest time to heal.
Can darker skin tones receive these treatments?
Yes. Certain laser systems and customized chemical peels can be safely performed on many skin types. In our opinion, chemical peels are a much safer treatment option for darker skin tones. A thorough evaluation is necessary to determine the safest treatment approach.
How often should chemical peels be performed?
Superficial peels may be repeated every few weeks, while medium and deep peels are performed less frequently based on individual needs.
Does deep resurfacing hurt?
In our experience, most patients experience minimal discomfort. Topical numbing cream and other comfort measures help make treatment well tolerated. This really does depend on who you choose to do your procedure.
Can chemical peels remove acne scars?
The sad truth is that NOTHING can remove acne scars. However, these scars can become less noticeable to others. In our experience, deep scars are best treated with deep chemical peels (“Hetter Peel”) in combination with other procedures.
How soon will I notice results?
Results from resurfacing often become visible within one to two weeks. Resurfacing improvements continue developing over several months as new collagen forms.
Is sunscreen necessary after treatment?
Absolutely. Daily broad-spectrum sunscreen is essential to protect healing skin, reduce pigmentation risks, and preserve long-term results.
